16th February, 2023 — Good Sports awards
Woodbridge Cricket Club crowned Club of the Year
Tasmania’s Woodbridge Cricket Club was awarded Good Sports 2022 National Club of the Year.
The champions at Woodbridge go above and beyond supporting their members and families. They’ve put in an incredible amount of hard work to turn their club around, and the results speak for themselves.
“It’s a big thing for a small, regional club to win such an award. It recognises the significant improvements that the club has made in becoming a family-friendly club,” Committee Member and Life Member Steve Jackson said.
Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at Parliament House, Canberra in February 2023, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.
Family-friendly Woodbridge Cricket Club
Steve said that before joining Good Sports, Woodbridge Cricket Club had a reputation of poor alcohol and smoking management. This lead at times to poor behaviour, poor sportsmanship and lack of community engagement.
"The club has changed from one which was viewed by locals and other teams as almost a lost cause, to becoming one which takes pride in its family-friendly atmosphere and respect for fellow players, other teams and the spirit of cricket,” Steve explained.
Woodbridge Cricket now also prides itself on its strong focus on encouraging junior participation and mentoring younger players.
The club is set to spend its prize money on providing further encouragement for local young people in the district to take up cricket.
Good Sports program a great support
"Players and supporters at the club are much happier, safer and healthier from the Good Sports experience,” said Steve.
Woodbridge CC has reached Gold Medal accreditation - the highest level of the Good Sports program.
The club has introduced a range of initiatives to help build a healthier club, such as designated smoke-free areas, healthier food, encouraging safe transport to and from events, making a variety of non and low alcoholic and healthier drinks available at the bar, and having alcohol-free prizes for raffles.
A big congratulations to the Good Sports Club of the Year!
