Western Districts RUFC wins ACT Club of the Year

Western Districts Rugby Union Football Club was crowned ACT Good Sports 2021 Club of the Year for embracing the Good Sports program. They’ve created an inclusive, vibrant, passionate and connected environment for the whole community.

“Our commitment to inclusivity and social connection extends beyond the club – we strive to make our club a safe space while also giving back to the community we welcome with open arms through supporting local businesses and charities,” said club committee member Fiona Austine.

“The Good Sports program allows us to put our vision into action, giving our members and community peace of mind that we’re looking out for them and their wellbeing.

Looking out for others, even outside of their club membership, is really important to this Rugby Union club. It’s part of their core values and what makes them a shining star of ACT community sport.

“As a club, we’re always seeking to build stronger community relationships,” said Fiona.

“Recently we hosted a touch footy evening to raise money for the Tongan Tsunami Appeal. With the support of the club, the Tongan community and the ACT and Federal Governments, we have been able to raise over $10,000 for this appeal. This type of activity is a huge part of our club.”

The Good Sports Awards are the ultimate trophy for any Good Sports club, paying tribute to the heart and soul of community sporting clubs – no matter their size or sporting code.

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation in Melbourne in March 2022, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.
