Albany Roller Derby League crowned WA Club of the Year
Albany Roller Derby League has been recognised as WA Club of the Year, National Club of the Year runner-up, and Community Club of the Year runner-up for its outstanding commitment to inclusivity, wellbeing, and community engagement.
Club spokesperson Natalie Jarvis said the club is passionate about empowering people of all ages and backgrounds through sport.
“Inclusivity, teamwork, and wellbeing are at the heart of our club. Through initiatives like our junior roller derby program and community outreach, we empower people of all ages and backgrounds to stay active, build resilience, and forge strong connections,” Natalie said.
Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in April 2025, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, reducing harms from alcohol and other drugs, and making their club the very best it can be.
Inclusivity is important at this club
Since joining Good Sports, the club said it has strengthened its safety and wellbeing policies, introducing clearer alcohol guidelines and dedicated leadership roles, including a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer and a Wellbeing Officer.
“Good Sports has helped us reinforce our commitment to providing a safe and inclusive space. We’ve implemented strong policies and leadership structures to ensure our members feel supported and valued,” Natalie continued.
As the only sporting club in the region to complete LGBTIQA+ training, Albany Roller Derby League actively champions diversity, mental health awareness, and inclusive spaces. The club has also introduced Mental Health First Aid training for coaches, ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
“We believe sport should be for everyone. By providing pathways for volunteers and underrepresented groups, and hosting family-friendly events, we are dedicated to making a lasting impact both within our club and across the community,” Natalie explained.
Albany Roller Derby League has achieved the highest level of the Good Sports program, implementing policies that cover alcohol and tobacco management, illegal drugs, mental health, and safe transport.
