Olympians Basketball is WA Club of the Year winner

Olympians Basketball Club from Geraldton was crowned the 2023 WA Club of the Year for its efforts in adopting practices and strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of their members, inspiring positive change and building a healthier, inclusive club environment.

“Good Sports helped us navigate our way through really challenging emotions after the tragic loss of a player, including providing recommendations for help and support services, with options and pathways that opened up communication and new ways of thinking at our club,” said Club Secretary, Hayley Halton.

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at Parliament House, Canberra in February 2024, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.

Encouraging healthier habits

"Since joining the Good Sports program, we’ve also been looking at ways to encourage better eating habits, including healthier snack options for players and club events. We've also moved away from alcohol-centric events and have ceased the sale of club stubby coolers which we’re currently looking to replace with safety conscious merchandise like hats and sunglasses.”

Olympians Basketball Club has reached the highest level of the Good Sports program, having implemented policies that cover alcohol and tobacco management, illegal drugs, mental health, and safe transport.
