Burwood Cricket Club wins Vic Club of the Year Award

Burwood Cricket Club was crowned the 2023 Good Sports Victorian Club of the Year and named runner-up for the National Club of the Year. It was recognised for its efforts in adopting practices and strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of their members, inspiring positive change and building a healthier, and inclusive club environment.

Club President, Kate Bellamy said Good Sports helped the club move away from some unhealthy traditions, including excessive drinking.

“It’s now no longer acceptable for members to drink excessively, and we’ve implemented several changes to tackle mental health including running a ‘wellbeing round’ where we openly discuss the topic,” Kate said.

“The Good Sports program helps us navigate this space, ensuring our members are fully supported and encouraged to reach out when they feel like they need additional help.”

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at Parliament House, Canberra in February 2024, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.

The cricket club for everyone

Burwood Cricket Club says it prides itself on offering community cricket to all, and offers programs unique to Victoria, including ‘All Abilities Blast’, ‘Walking Cricket’ and ‘Social Sixes.’

“We’re proud to be a truly inclusive and diverse club, which has seen us recruit more females and tailor programs to cater for everyone, regardless of age, ability or experience,” Kate continued.

“The members of Burwood Cricket Club are passionate about cricket, however it’s through our inclusive activities that connectedness is truly nurtured.”
