Melton RUFC crowned Vic Club of the Year

Melton Rugby Union Football Club was celebrated at the Good Sports Awards after being named the 2022 Victorian Good Sports Club of the Year.

“We support many families as best we can, to ensure we provide them the opportunity to play the sport of rugby union. Our members, players and the wider community reap the benefits of social interaction, physical activity, teamwork and discipline, by engaging in training sessions and the youth programs we have in place," said Club Secretary, Priscilla Maiava.

The rugby club was recognised for adopting practices and strategies to improve the wellbeing of their members, inspiring positive change and building a healthier and more family-friendly club.

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at Parliament House, Canberra in February 2023, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.

Focus on mental health and wellbeing

“Rugby life is a journey not a destination. We'd like to think we have created an environment where everyone feels welcome and is able to be themselves. There's no judging on anyone's physical abilities and capabilities. We learn and grow stronger together,” Priscilla added.

After being impacted by COVID lockdowns, the club said it’s had a strong focus on mental health and wellbeing. It has encouraged activities such as cultural cooking classes and running rugby clinics during the school holidays, to help keep members engaged.

Additionally, the club has set up a donation pantry of rugby boots, to reduce financial burdens on families. This year, the club plans to run workshops around mental health, as well as Legal Aid support. Members will also have the chance to volunteer at a homeless shelter.
