UWA Boat Club is WA Club of the Year!

UWA Boat Club was crowned Western Australia Good Sports Club of the Year for changing club culture through the Good Sports program, role modelling healthy behaviours and prioritising their members’ health, wellbeing and safety.

This star club has been featured on the Good Sports website before, and their win just goes to show why they are such an inspiration to others.

“The UWA Boat Club joined Good Sports to provide resources to our members and volunteers that allows us to constantly foster a safe and inclusive community,” said club President Jeremy Gillbanks.

“Since joining, we’ve been able to change the drinking culture at the club towards healthier options and also cultivate a supportive environment for those struggling with mental health.”

The boat club is connected to the University of Western Australia, so the majority of their members are young people. They focus on responsible alcohol management and sharing mental health support resources provided by Good Sports.

One of the biggest changes UWABC implemented last year was the creation of a risk management matrix. This matrix included topics from safety in the facility, to scenarios concerning irresponsible alcohol management, to transport concerns. It’s changed over time with input from the committee. It means the club can keep working to provide a safer environment for everyone.

UWABC also has future plans to support a local mental health charity this year.

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation in Melbourne in March 2022, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.
