Dominoes Basketball Club awarded Tas Club of the Year

Dominoes Basketball Club was crowned the 2023 Good Sports Tasmanian Club of the Year for going above and beyond to improve the health and wellbeing of their members, inspiring positive change and building a healthier, and inclusive club environment.

The triumph is not the first for the club, having won the 2020 Good Sports Tasmanian Club of the Year award and placing as runner-up for it last year.

President, Daniel Ogg said Good Sports had helped the club to promote healthy behaviours, leading to changed attitudes towards alcohol and other drug consumption.

“Dominoes is more than just a place to play basketball – it’s s a place that creates a sense of belonging, promotes positive behaviours, and is welcoming of all.”

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at Parliament House, Canberra in February 2024, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.

Healthy role models on and off the court

“We believe that educating families on what a healthy lifestyle looks like has a far-reaching impact beyond the basketball court, helping reduce the likelihood of young people engaging in unhealthy behaviours including risky alcohol consumption, smoking and vaping, and other drug use,” Daniel said.

“Dominoes prides itself on being a family-oriented club and our older age group leaders are role models to our younger participants, demonstrating that looking after your body, mind and soul is an enormous factor in being the best you can be.”

Dominoes Basketball Club has reached the highest level of the Good Sports program, having implemented policies that cover alcohol and tobacco management, illegal drugs, mental health, and safe transport.
