Tarrawanna Blueys Football Club are Safe Transport stars

Tarrawanna Blueys Football Club was celebrated at the Good Sports Awards at Parliament House in Canberra in late March, for its strong commitment to road safety, and preventing and reducing harms from alcohol and other drugs.

The star club won the National Good Sports Safe Transport Award, for prioritising member safety through safe transport practices that are aimed at reducing the risk of drink or drug driving.

“We’re proud that we’ve been part of the Good Sports program for more than 15 years and have a number of strategies in place to help our members get home safely,” said Club President, Michael Dent.

“Any major function we run comes with a clear set of guidelines, safe transport options and expectations about alcohol and behaviour. Our regular sponsor events include access to a courtesy bus and free call service for taxis.

“We also ensure all our premier events come with multiple safe transport arrangements. Our recent presentation night included door-to-door bus transport for members, in the ticket price.”

Keeping it family friendly

Michael said that since joining the Good Sports program, the club has implemented several changes to help prioritise the health and wellbeing of its members, and to build and maintain a safe and welcoming environment.

“We joined Good Sports as a way of ensuring our club was seen as a family-friendly and inclusive organisation,” Michael said.

“We have a responsible approach to alcohol consumption, with low-strength and non-alcohol options available, along with plenty of food on matchdays. We have staffed trained in the Responsible Service of alcohol, and we’ve reduced our reliance of alcohol sales and sponsorship.”

“We have also linked in to outreach services for members experiencing issues with alcohol, drugs or mental health issues,” he added.

The club will be awarded $1000 for its achievement, which the club says will go towards training equipment for junior and women’s teams.
