Park Orchards North Ringwood Parish JFC wins VIC Club of the Year

The Park Orchards North Ringwood Parish Junior Football Club has been recognised as 2024 Good Sports Victorian Club of the Year and runner-up for the Mental Health Excellence Award for its dedication to fostering a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment for players and the wider community.

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in April 2025, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, reducing harms from alcohol and other drugs, and making their club the very best it can be.

Club President Travis Rankin said the club joined Good Sports after the COVID lockdowns to prioritise mental wellbeing and reconnection for players and families.

“After a period of isolation, we wanted to create a safe and positive space for our community to come together again. Since joining Good Sports, we’ve reinforced our alcohol and drug policies and made mental health support a key priority,” Travis said.

“We’ve funded mental health first aid training for parents and volunteers and provide education for our players through initiatives like ‘Thrive Nights’. We encourage open conversations and work to reduce the stigma around mental health.”

Responsible attitudes towards alcohol

The club said it promotes responsible attitudes towards alcohol and has a no-tolerance policy for illicit drug use, ensuring a safe and family-friendly environment for all members and the community.

Another initiative the club is proud to have introduced is their Community Hardship Fund, which enables them to support families who may be experiencing financial or emotional hardship.

“We prioritise participation and enjoyment over winning, and actively encourage female participation and gender equality, ensuring every player and volunteer feels valued,” Travis continued.

“As a club, we’ve made a conscious effort to build a culture of empathy, understanding, and inclusivity, creating a strong sense of belonging for all. Our approach ensures that everyone feels supported and empowered.”

Travis said the club’s win reflects its ongoing commitment to creating a safe, healthy, and family-friendly environment.

“This recognition highlights the hard work of our volunteers, committee members, and families who share our vision for a supportive and inclusive club culture.”
