Mackay Masters Sea Turtles crowned New Club of the Year

Mackay Masters Sea Turtles was celebrated at the Good Sports Awards at Parliament House in Canberra in late March, for its strong commitment to promoting positive health and wellbeing.

The star club, which formed last year, won the national Good Sports New Club of the Year Award, for its leadership in building a safe and inclusive club environment, and for actively striving to prevent and reduce harms from alcohol and other drugs.

“When we started as a new club in our region last year, we set out to be a family friendly club that is inclusive, family oriented, and safe. We wanted to provide a healthy sporting experience that was not focussed on drinking and smoking,” said Club President, Ken Fuller.

Health and fitness the focus

“The Good Sports program has given us the tools and support to create that environment from the start, giving us access to the necessary information to allow members to engage in our sport in a healthy way.”

“We have players from all ages, with family friendly training and locations for events. We do not run activities where the main activity is drinking, we promote fitness and health as a central fixture.”

“We do not have any alcohol sponsors, we instead team up with local community sponsors, that are like minded and have similar community standards,” Ken added.

Mackay Masters Sea Turtles will win a cash prize for its achievement, which the club says will be spent on medical supplies.
