Western Magic AFC wins New Club of the Year
Western Magic Australian Football Club has been named the 2024 Good Sports New Club of the Year for its commitment to inspiring positive change and taking responsibility for its members, working hard to reduce harms from alcohol and other drug harm, and creating a safer and more welcoming club environment.
Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in April 2025, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, reducing harms from alcohol and other drugs, and making their club the very best it can be.
Keeping our members safe and healthy
Committee Member Helen Dick said her club, from Quakers Hill NSW, endeavours to create a positive, safe and friendly environment for its members.
“We joined Good Sports to give us the support we needed to manage difficult issues around alcohol, drugs and mental health, that we encounter as a club based in a diverse community with a lower socioeconomic demographic,” Helen said.
“As a small senior’s club with limited resources and an active liquor licence for home games we want to ensure that we are proactively working to keep our members safe and creating a healthy club culture.
“The opportunity to connect with and learn from other clubs at Good Sports workshops has been invaluable. With support from the online resources and the team at Good Sports, we can be confident in delivering best-practice management of alcohol and other drugs.”
Since joining Good Sports, the club has made changes such as clear signage around alcohol-free zones and ensuring safe transport options for members who have been drinking, non-alcoholic prizes for team awards and reviewing its online presence to make sure they’re role modelling healthy behaviours.
Western AFC provides a welcoming space for all and pays homage to the traditional custodians of the Blacktown and western Sydney region through the club’s colours and intentionally seeking to connect, engage and support local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players.
