15th March, 2022 — Good Sports awards

Eagleby Giants Junior champions

Queensland Rugby League champions are flying high!

The Eagleby Giants Junior Rugby League Football Club has been crowned the Good Sports 2021 Junior Club of the Year and the Queensland 2021 Good Sports Club of the Year.

The awards were received for their commitment to creating a safer place for junior members to play sport, setting them up for a brighter future.

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation in Melbourne in March 2022, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.

Eagleby Giants JRLFC a safe place to be

Eagleby Giants Junior Rugby League Football Club receives $1,000 for creating a safe space specifically for kids and their families in Eagleby to find a sense of belonging through sport and community.

“The Good Sports program helped our club make small changes to combat bigger health and societal problem before they begin, especially among young people,” said Club Vice President Nick Carroll.

“This has been the greatest reward but to also be recognised for the hard work we’ve done to turn things around is a really proud moment for us.”

Some of the older players have been mentoring the younger members. Players aged 14 to 16 join in to exercise with their mentors, learning healthy habits and discipline.

At Eagleby, they’re also very focussed on mental health, with a weekly mental health support night and regular chats from their Mental Health Officers to everyone from the Under 9s up.
