3rd April, 2025 — Good Sports awards
Dougal Graham named NSW Volunteer of the Year
Dougal Graham has been named the NSW Volunteer of the Year at the Good Sports Awards, recognising his unwavering commitment to BlowFly Cricket and its inclusive community.
BlowFly Cricket Club is based in Hornsby, north of Sydney. They make it their mission for everyone to be able to participate in an Aussie favourite game, designed with players with intellectual disabilities in mind.
Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in April 2025, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, reducing harms from alcohol and other drugs, and making their club the very best it can be.
Dedication unwavering at 90 years old
BlowFly Cricket Founder Mark Rushton praised Dougal’s tireless efforts, particularly his dedication to fundraising and creating a welcoming space for players of all abilities.
"Dougal is an inspiration to us all. At 90 years old, he continues to give his time and energy to ensure BlowFly Cricket thrives,” Mr Rushton said.
“Whether he’s manning the post-game BBQ, running Bunnings fundraisers, or collecting thousands of bottles and cans for our Return and Earn initiative, Dougal’s dedication is second to none.
"Since 2021, he has single-handedly collected, sorted, and bagged more than 85,000 recyclable items, raising over $8,500 for our Coaching Academy. His efforts have not only provided crucial funding but have also strengthened community ties and helped reduce our environmental impact.
"Dougal’s generosity, perseverance, and community spirit embody the very best of Good Sports. He never lets the weather, or his age, slow him down. His work has had a profound impact on our players, helping them gain confidence, develop new skills, and feel a sense of belonging.
"He is a true champion of grassroots sport, and we are incredibly grateful for everything he does. This recognition is a fitting tribute to a man who has given so much to BlowFly Cricket and beyond."
