Seacliff SLSC crowned SA Club of the Year

Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club was crowned Good Sports 2023 SA Club of the Year for its efforts in adopting practices and strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of their members, inspiring positive change and building a healthier, inclusive club environment.

The star club was also named runner-up for the Good Sports National Community Club Award for its positive impact on the wider community, going above and beyond the core requirements of a sports club.

Club vice president, Dr Glen Patten OAM said the club integrates the wider community in all that it does, ensuring the beach is accessible for all to enjoy.

Hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at Parliament House, Canberra in February 2024, the Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.

Everyone’s included on the beach

“Seacliff SLSC leads the state and Australia when it comes to its variety of club and community programs across all ages, genders and abilities,” Dr Patten OAM said.

“For example, we recently introduced the "Beach for All" project to roll out beach mats, water wheelchairs and a hoist, to assist the community to enjoy the sand and surf, many for the first time.”

Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club has reached Gold Medal status - the highest level of the Good Sports program. They’ve implemented policies that cover alcohol and tobacco management, illegal drugs, mental health, and safe transport.

“Embracing the policies of Good Sports, we run information sessions led by experts on alcohol and other drugs in sport, and host events including the ‘24-hour row’ where club members raise money for mental health,” Dr Patten OAM continued.

“Additionally, our engagement with Good Sports policies has resulted in a smoke-free footprint, the introduction of alcohol management initiatives and safe transport operating procedures.”
