Wallsend Wolves are Country Club Champions

Wallsend Touch Association: 22nd June, 2012

Wallsend Wolves are Country Club Champions

Last year our pride was badly dented by the strong Wollongong club who defeated the Mighty Wolves to become Champion Club at the Country Championships which are held annually at Dubbo.  This year all of our teams were selected early with a goal to train hard and hopefully win back the coveted ‘Champion Club’ trophy.  There were a total of 21 affiliates from NSW Country and 84 teams.

We selected twelve representative teams from Under 20 men and women to Over 50 men, these teams were on a mission, not only to brush away the bruises from last year’s defeat but to play with the Wolf Pack with pride and good sportsmanship.  The Country Championship was also their last chance to show what they could do as there were State and Regional selectors attending Dubbo to finalise the State teams to play Queensland in December.

In bitterly cold Dubbo weather on Saturday we had mixed result but all teams performed well, by the time we hit Sunday afternoon most teams were at their peak with 8 of the 12 teams progressing to the finals of their division with a record number of 5 teams winning (20 Women, Ladies Open, 30 Women, 35 Men, 40 men).  After the tally of points Wallsend Wolves was announced  ‘ Country Club Champions’ with Wollongong runners up.

The best was yet to come, the following week 21 of our players, coaches and managers were selected in the state team.  We wish them all the best and hope they all play to their ability, but most importantly enjoy this great honour.
