New outdoor smoke-free laws for South Australia

New outdoor smoke-free laws for South Australia

World No Tobacco Day, on May 31, saw new smoke-free laws in South Australia come into effect.

Under the new law, smoking is banned within 10m of children’s public playground equipment.

Smoking is banned under public transport waiting areas, including bus, tram, train and taxi shelters and other areas used to board or alight from public transport that are covered by a roof.

The age that a person can be fined for smoking-related offences has been reduced to 15 years.

Incorporated bodies and local councils can apply to have an outdoor area or event declared smoke-free, which will be enforceable under the Act. Examples of such areas or events include parks, fetes, sporting events, festivals, music and art events, street parades, community and cultural events and outdoor shopping areas.

If you smoke in a smoke-free area, you can be fined ($75 expiation fee, maximum fine $200).

By making selected outdoor areas smoke-free, we are making a positive step towards a healthier future for all South Australians.

For further information about declared smoke-free outdoor areas and events, or before applying, please phone the SA Health Tobacco Control Unit on 08 8274 3451.
